Big pipe organs are not unusual, particularly in large churches of a certain age, but installations of new ones are somewhat rare. Electronic organs have become popular, less-expensive options for churches.

But electronic organs can't match the voice or longevity of a pipe organ.

"There are pipe organs in Europe that are 500 years old and still playing perfectly well," Bono said.

Jonkman said she already is awed by the power and grace of the unfinished organ, which she has been breaking in, so to speak, on recent Sundays. Even after Bono and Reichert finish their work, the organ will need to "settle" for a couple of months as the pipes get acquainted with one another like siblings sharing a cramped bedroom. Soon enough, they will be a harmonious family. The dedication of the organ is scheduled for January.
